The Thinking Behind It

Why CBDGum.com belongs in the PremiumBrands collection, and the choices behind it.

As the founder of PremiumBrands, I offer selected domain names that I would consider building on myself. CBDGum.com belongs in that collection because it puts a specific category and format into one clear introduction. I like being able to look at a name and understand the kind of working brief it invites. With this one, the conversation can begin with editorial focus, packaging research or a future brand identity, rather than a long explanation of how to pronounce it.

The decision that shaped my view

I acquired the press release distribution business operating on i-Newswire.com in 2007. In 2013 I secured iNewswire.com. The next step was a longer negotiation for Newswire.com, and I consulted SEO professionals before moving the business to that name in February 2015. Those were decisions about an operating business and the identity it would use for the work ahead.

The morning of the switch, a prospect told one of our sales agents, “Oh yeah, Newswire.com. I've heard of you guys.” That was impossible at the time. It is a moment I remember because we had changed the name, not suddenly become a different team overnight. The new identity gave the business a different introduction. The work still had to earn the relationship that followed.

The business we helped build was acquired by Issuer Direct in 2022 for about $44 million. The acquisition filing records the business transaction. That was a purchase of the business and the team's work, not a price for the domain. The experience is part of why I pay attention to the names people choose before a project becomes busy with everything else.

A name worth making a plan for

I bought PremiumBrands.com before I had a plan for it. Premium names matter to me, and waiting would probably have meant losing the opportunity to build on this one. By now it could be the address of someone else's business. I wanted the choice to develop the idea under the name that felt right, so I secured the identity and gave myself room to decide what belonged behind it.

That is also the test I use when selecting names: would I build on this? The ones I have not built on yet are the ones I am open to selling. I am interested in a name's usefulness to a founder, not a complicated story about how many projects could theoretically use it. CBDGum.com makes its area of focus visible, and a focused founder can turn that clarity into a practical brief.

For this domain, I would start by choosing the work the identity is meant to organize. A research publication and a packaging studio need different teams and different standards. The name is specific enough to keep the category in view while that choice is made. I would rather see a founder make that choice deliberately than stretch one launch across several unrelated promises.

Why I prefer making the choice early

The fix-it-later mindset is easy to understand: begin with a substitute and upgrade once the project has made it. The difficulty is that the substitute can become part of every working surface. A later change reaches email addresses, presentations, packaging, signs and the name people have learned to use. I prefer considering the preferred name while the plan is still easy to shape around it.

AI gives more people a way to create a useful first version of a website or a product. My practical view is that a recognizable name becomes more valuable to the work of standing apart when a prototype is easier to reproduce. Another team can build similar functions; it cannot occupy the same domain address. That is a reason to think carefully about the identity, then get on with building something worthy of it.

A great name will not save a bad business. The offer, the judgment and the quality of execution remain the founder's responsibility. My supporting strategy and development work is through OnlineBusiness.com, and PremiumBrands is where the selected names are offered.

If CBDGum.com fits what you want to build, tell me about the direction you have in mind. If your preferred name is elsewhere, PremiumBrands can help pursue its acquisition too. I want that first conversation to begin with the identity you would be proud to put on your work. A premium .com is a trust shortcut.
